A San Francisco International Airport official said that a United Airlines flight headed to Kona made an emergency return to SFO Thursday morning.

The Boeing 757 with 213 people on board departed SFO at about 9 a.m. for Kona but returned because after a crew member reported a potential mechanical problem.

“As a precaution, flight 1721 returned to San Francisco today after the crew reported a mechanical issue. Our team in San Francisco is working to accommodate all of our customers to Kona today,” United spokesman Luke Punzenberger said in an email to West Hawaii Today.

Officials could not say what caused the problem and no other information about the incident was available.
